We’re barely one week into 2016 and it’s already obvious that this will be the year of true-crime obsession.
Making a Murderer has polarized viewers and deepened our Netflix addiction, we’re getting our weekly Serial fix again thanks to Sarah Koenig, and next up is Ryan Murphy‘s American Crime Story, which debuts on Feb. 2 with The People v. O.J. Simpson for its freshman season.
Though American Crime Story hasn’t officially gotten a green light for Season 2, apparently the buzz around The People v. O.J. Simpson has been strong enough to at least open up discussion for a second season topic. The plot will move from juicy to stormy as Murphy and crew will attempt to tell the story of Hurricane Katrina from a unique point of view, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I want this show to be a socially conscious, socially aware examination of different types of crime around the world,” Murphy told THR. “And in my opinion, Katrina was a f***ing crime — a crime against a lot of people who didn’t have a strong voice — and we’re going to treat it as a crime. That’s what this show is all about.”
Murphy added that he plans to explore all sides of what went down through following the stories of a group of six to eight people. He wants to tackle all of the aftermath of the tragedy, from the Superdome to the hospital, and tell the stories of the helpless people who were exploited after the disaster.

According to THR, FX Productions is still negotiating Hurricane Katrina source material, but the hunt has already begun for American Crime Story Season 2 writers, and they plan to go into production in fall 2016.
