On Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian made an insensitive joke about her brother Rob’s weight.
On this week’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the family was vacationing in St. Barts. Kim Kardashian talked about a tattoo Rob got to cover a previous tattoo he’d gotten for his ex Adrienne Bailon.
“[Rob] covered it with a life-sized Barbie doll of Rita that has now turned into a Cabbage Patch doll,” she said, laughing. The reason for the tattoo’s distortion? His 100-pound weight gain.

Rob Kardashian has been MIA from Keeping Up with the Kardashians for the past few seasons and has been staying out of the public eye due to shame about his weight gain. He’s also battling depression and was recently diagnosed with diabetes. It’s clear he’s struggling, so jokes about his weight by his family on national television are beyond insensitive.
On social media, the Kardashians are supportive of Rob. But it’s easy to write a press and audience-friendly post. The tough part is sticking to it if you don’t mean it. Digs like this are a better indicator of the way they treat Rob when the cameras aren’t around.

Rob is obviously in a vulnerable frame of mind and he needs the support of his family to help him get through this tough time. Kim is the golden girl of the family, so her shaming comments probably hurt a lot. Perhaps this mean-girl behavior is part of why Rob is having such a hard time. He’s popped up on social media from time to time working out and eating well. But then he falls again. These are the kind of comments that can send someone in a fragile state back to old habits.
