Shadowhunters premiered last night on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) in all its sexy glory. Find out what’s in store for the rest of the season, especially with regard to that love triangle between Clary, Jace and Simon we all know is coming.
We chatted with star Katherine McNamara, who plays Clary in the series, and she dished on the romance in Season 1.

“There’s a lot of tension in our show of many sorts, let me tell you,” teased McNamara.
She continued, “In the books, she chooses Jace pretty quickly, and that’s kind of the end of it for a while. For a while. But what makes it so interesting is that she can really never choose between the two of them, because each represents a different side of who she is. Jace represents that kind of dark shadow world, and he’s there to guide her and push her and challenge her to become this warrior. And Simon represents the human side of her… what makes her herself and what grounds her in her past, and her family and everything that she’s known, and everything that’s gotten her to this point. For her, essentially, it’s choosing half of herself, which is why it’s such a dynamic conflict throughout the season.”

McNamara also shared what it’s like to play “love triangle girl” for the first time in her career.
“I used to play the mean girl a lot, so I was the other side of the love triangle. I was the one trying to break up the people you wanted to be together forever. But I’ve made it to love triangle girl! Yes!” McNamara joked with a laugh. “No, it’s great, because Clary really is the eyes of the audience in all of this as she comes into this world, and as she experiences everything. It’s kind of a crazy journey to go on, because I get to put a lot of myself into the character, and that’s exciting but also terrifying, because a lot of things hit very close to home.”
