Carter was reportedly arrested Wednesday evening at a bar in South Florida.
According to TMZ, officers took Carter into custody around 8:15 p.m. at the Hog’s Breath Saloon, a famous bar in Key West. According to the site, police arrived on the scene after there was some kind of fight inside the bar reportedly involving Carter, who was arrested on the scene. He was booked for misdemeanor battery.
Here’s the thing: 8:15 p.m. is pretty early to be getting into a fight at a bar, making for a lot of speculation that some kind of substance may have been involved. And that’s pretty bad news for Carter, who’s been sober now for almost a decade.
The singer has been pretty up-front about his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. And while he’s never said publicly that he’s kicked alcohol altogether, he’s explained how hard he’s worked on his path to sobriety and said in past interviews that he’s proud of his progress in fighting his addictions.

“I am completely drug-free,” Carter said in a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, following the release of his memoir. “I have had occasional drinks at times, and it’s something that I struggle with because I’m not perfect. But at the same time, I enjoy being clean and sober more. Alcoholism is definitely a struggle for me. I’m taking it one day at a time, working on myself, and I’m winning the battle.”
At that time, Carter was optimistic about continuing on his path to sobriety.
“I thought about it, and who I am now, versus the person I was before, I’m completely different,” he said. “I’m almost not afraid — actually, I’m not afraid to show the world who I am now. I’m not afraid to show that I am weak at times, but I am making it. It’s not easy, and it’s a process, but it’ll be interesting to show the world. It’s gonna be cool.”
