The parenting skills of Kim Fields were on full display during this week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Fields pulled her kids out of a meeting that she felt was a little too racy, but not all viewers approved.
The addition of Kim Fields to the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta has been a hot button issue all season long. Her laid-back, family-first approach to life has conflicted with the rest of the Housewives, who would rather booze it up on a boat than eat homemade snacks and quietly read a book.

The many differences between Fields and her cast mates were once again evident during tonight’s RHOA episode. For the second time this season, Kim had to extract herself from a situation she wasn’t comfortable with. This time, the problematic situation involved her kids.

This season has not been particularly family-friendly, with physical attacks and shouting matches occurring on a regular basis. You would think that a laid-back group meeting with Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson would be a relatively tame affair, but few things ever go as planned on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Fields brought her two young children to the meeting and was mortified when Wilson made a bold statement about how people do not like African American boys. Upon hearing this, Fields quickly rushed her two children out of the room. This move drew mixed responses from viewers:
After calmly explaining to her son Sebastian that sometimes people are judged by the color of their skin, Fields decided to head back to the shuttle bus to regroup. This move drew unanimous scorn from the rest of the cast, and even Sheree Whitfield felt the need to chime in with some disapproval of her own.
While Fields can certainly be blamed for bringing two incredibly bored children to a decidedly grown-up event (young Sebastian referred to the ordeal as “meeting people of stupid Congress. Who cares?”), it’s not fair to call her out for her parenting skills. Even the best parents struggle to appropriately discuss issues such as racism in America with their children. Yes, it would be great for Fields to tackle the issue head-on, but she’s not the only person who has frozen up in this type of situation.
