The new Suicide Squad trailer just dropped and it’s almost as insane as its unlikely heroes.
For those unfamiliar with DC Comics’ Suicide Squad storyline, the premise is laid out pretty early on: Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) wants to assemble a team of the baddest baddies on the planet, plant bombs in their brains so that they have to do her bidding, and then send them into the places where no one else will go as a form of plausible deniability.

What could go wrong?
The weird thing is, the first trailer to drop made it look like the film comprised the creepiest collection of psychopaths imaginable, while this new trailer (perfectly set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”) makes it feel more like a snark-fueled romp through sarcasm town, which is now populated by misunderstood criminals.
Maybe we’re just not meant to think too hard about it. The trailer is, after all, deliciously fun and gives us a few spoilers to sink our teeth into — like Harley Quinn’s backstory.
With a film full of movie stars, it’s hard not to get excited each time we get to see one of them sneer, crack a joke, or sneak a drink (we’re looking at you, Jai Courtney, aka Captain Boomerang) but it’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn who really steals the show. And the trailer appears to show her origin story. About a minute and half in, we see the Joker (Jared Leto) pull a frighteningly milk-white Quinn from a vat of chemicals.

In addition to the surprising new tone and oodles of bad-guy one-liners, Warner Bros. has rolled out electrifying new posters for the film that seem to embrace a more comic book-colored world than recent comic adaptations. Just look at all that neon!

But we can’t help but wonder if the new marketing angle isn’t a bid to help tamp down on early chatter that the film could land an R rating. With such villainous characters at its helm, such a rating doesn’t seem unlikely. However, since Warner Bros is aiming to keep all of the DC movies rated PG-13, a slightly less terrifying trailer is probably a good idea.

Overall, we’ve got to say that the new trailer is surprising in a lot of ways. We aren’t entirely sure if the movie will be as funny as this trailer makes it out to be, but it’s certainly got our attention in a whole new way. It will be interesting to see, as we near the film’s opening, what other little surprises Suicide Squad has in store.
