Matthew Perry makes confession about his drug use while filming Friends

Matthew Perry‘s drug and alcohol addiction had an effect on his Friends role that still leaves ripples to this day.

Perry’s past painkiller addiction is no secret — the actor has been vocal about his recovery process — and it is obvious by Chandler Bing’s changing appearance during the course of Friends when exactly he was at the height of that addiction. But Perry has never really gotten into how badly it could have affected his career — until now.

In an interview with Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 on Friday, Perry admitted that his painkiller addiction has caused a huge gap in his memory and he is completely unable to remember filming a solid three years of Friends.

When asked which episode of the iconic show was his least favorite, Perry’s response was startling.

“Oh my goodness,” he said. “I think the answer is I don’t remember three years of it. So none of those… somewhere between Season 3 and 6.

“A little bit of the time, I was a little out of it, yeah,” he added.

But Perry’s tough time or any kind of animosity has nothing to do with why he was not able to join the rest of his castmates to film a tribute to former Friends director James Burrows. He might film something separately, but only because his rehearsal schedule for the London play The End of Longing prevented him from joining the others.

“Matthew may tape something for the tribute,” his rep said in a statement. “In other words, this is not the reunion people have been hoping for.”

But that doesn’t mean there will never be a reunion. Perry says it is something that has definitely been discussed among the actors.

“I think we would be open to doing something, some kind of TV special,” he told Evans. “We’ve talked about it a little bit over dinner. It’s a really good group. There isn’t a jerk in the group, and that really saved us for 10 years.”
