Whoopi Goldberg isn’t done weighing in on this year’s Oscars controversy.

She and her cohosts on The View have been discussing the #OscarsSoWhite controversy extensively, but on Monday, they continued by taking on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision, made public in a pledge last Friday, to double membership of women and minorities by 2020.
“The issue is not the Academy,” Goldberg said on the show. “Even if you fill the Academy with black and Latino and Asian members, if there’s no one on the screen to vote for, you’re not going to get the outcome that you want.”
And then Goldberg tried to use her own Oscar win, for Best Supporting Actress in Ghost in 1991, as proof that the controversy is overblown.
“I won once,” she stated. “So it can’t be that racist.”

Goldberg joins a number of celebrities of color, including Stacey Dash, who have made controversial comments in support of the Oscars. Meanwhile, the list of notable black celebrities who are boycotting the event, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee, continues to grow.
Goldberg has been adamant that she doesn’t support the planned boycott, saying the problem lies not with the Oscars, but with the relatively small number of roles for black actors.
“You need directors and producers who will say, ‘Hey, what about so and so?’” she said. “They need to be aware that the picture is not complete. You wanna boycott something? Don’t go see the movies that don’t have your representation. That’s the boycott you want. To me, we have this conversation every year. It pisses me off.”
