Leah Messer’s latest custody update is a good sign she’s maturing

After rehab, therapy and some nasty court battles, Teen Mom 2‘s Leah Messer regains shared custody of her twin daughters.

To say it’s been a tough road for Leah Messer would perhaps be the understatement of the century. The Teen Mom 2 cast member and mother of three hasn’t had an easy time co-parenting with ex-husband Corey Simms, the father of her 6-year-old twin daughters.

During the most recent season of Teen Mom, viewers saw Messer protest Simms’ allegations that she was using drugs, staying up all night and making the girls late for school. (If you were following the season, you’d remember there was also some business about one of the twins knowing how to make toast, and arguments about whether or not that was an appropriate task for a kid her age.)

Simms was awarded primary custody of his daughters in October, but on Wednesday, Messer regained shared custody, after disproving some of Simms’ claims, specifically that the girls had repeatedly been late for school. The victory for Messer means she will have the twins Thursday through Sunday, and Simms will get them for the rest of the week, as well as one weekend a month. Teen Mom 2 has also seen Ali and Aleeah’s parents argue quite a bit about money, but now the two have arrived at an agreement to divide all bills related to the girls in half.

Messer has had one of the most chaotic storylines of the Teen Mom franchise. In the time the show’s been on, fans have seen her get back together with Simms, get married, divorced, married again, have another baby, and get divorced again, as well as struggle to take care of a child with special needs and two other kids. It’s been excruciating to watch her deal with so much unrelenting drama, whether it’s about her romantic life, money, parenting or just trying to move forward and take care of herself.

Hopefully, getting her girls back will restore some of the confidence she’s talked about having lost, and propel her toward making things better overall for herself and her family.
