Winter has already gained stardom with her role on Modern Family, but she revealed in an interview with People magazine that she has made a big decision about her future: She plans to become a social justice lawyer.
Winter knows the court system inside and out after spending much of her childhood there to transfer custody from her mother to her sister, and then, last year, to become an emancipated minor and separate herself from her family entirely. Now 18 years old, Winter told Peopleshe’s busily applying to colleges.
“I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with the court system,” she admitted to the magazine. “But with what I’ve gone through, I think it’s really important to become a voice for abuse victims who have no voice. I want to be able to make a difference.”

Winter also revealed that she’s applied to more than a dozen universities, but hopes to study in Los Angeles so she can stay close to her sister and continue acting on Modern Family, though she has specific reasons for wanting to stay in the spotlight.
“Having success and a platform like I currently have, I’m able to make a difference,” she said. “The most important thing we can do is leave a mark on this earth — not for ourselves to be remembered, but for us but to be remembered for something we did for other people. That’s what really matters to me.”
