It’s not award season until the anonymous Internet critics come out to yell. At this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Ariel Winter wasn’t having any of it. The Modern Family actress walked the red carpet in a stunning strapless black dress with an open back. So open, in fact, that it showed part of her breast reduction scars.
When everyone began labeling it a mishap, Winter quickly took to Twitter to explain that she exposed her scars on purpose. She’s proud of her body — scars included.
She tweeted to her fans, “Guys, there’s a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are a part of me, and I’m not ashamed of them at all!”

There’s nothing like a celebrity practicing and preaching body positivity! I love it.
Winter first opened up about her breast reduction surgery to Glamour last April, saying, “I can’t even put into words about how amazing it feels to really feel right.”
She explained that the main reason she decided to go through with the breast reduction surgery was because of the physical pain it was causing her. And although she says she did it for herself, there were outside factors that she also considered before making her decision. Namely, all the comments she’s subjected to on social media.
“I could post a photo where I feel really good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I’m disgusting,” Winter explained.

This isn’t the first time Winter has taken a stand against body shaming and critics alike. She often uses her Instagram as a platform to praise and encourage other women or talk candidly about the double standards women experience. Winter is definitely the kind of celebrity you want to follow if you’re looking for positive, smart and inspiring women!
