Amy Duggar and Dillon King seem like a match made in heaven.

But in a new joint video interview with People magazine, the couple reveals that their road to marital bliss was far from smooth, and a definite departure from the strict, traditional courtship processes employed by the rest of Duggar’s famous clan.
“We met six or seven years ago through mutual friends,” King begins, before Duggar interrupts.
“He insulted me,” she explains. “That’s how it started. He literally said, ‘Hey, I’m Dillon. What the heck are you wearing?’ So right then, before he even had a chance, he was put in the friend zone.”
But before long, the two started deepening their friendship, even though there was a steep learning curve for King when it came to integrating with the famous Duggars.
“I knew nothing about them — absolutely nothing about them,” he says. “I did not know their religious beliefs. I didn’t know who they were. I definitely didn’t know how strict they were and how conservative they were. I had never seen the show or anything.”

He continues, “When I first got there, I didn’t know there were certain things you couldn’t say. I didn’t know that if you wear certain clothes, that’s bad too.”
Duggar interjects again, laughing, “I wasn’t going to tell you. I was going to let you crash and burn, and you did.”
The couple also explains how their friendship started to grow into something more.
“Dillon’s always been around,” Duggar explains. “He’s the guy who’s always stuck around no matter what’s happened, no matter what family crisis we had. He was always right there. We didn’t realize that that was love. It took seven years to realize.”
