Teresa Giudice drops a bombshell in her first post-prison sitdown interview

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice is putting a dark chapter in her life behind her, but she’s willing to open up about it first.

During her first television interview with Good Morning America‘s Amy Robach, which aired on Tuesday morning, Giudice addressed some important aspects of her life, including her current financial situation and the awful time she spent behind bars.

“[We’re not in] foreclosure any longer, thank you, God,” Giudice said of her finances, adding, “And our restitution’s paid off. We’re in — thank God — in good shape.”

Giudice served 11 months in a federal correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut, before her release in December (and her house arrest officially came to an end earlier this month). But despite serving time, she does not believe she was breaking the law; and when asked if she thought she had, she simply answered, “No.”

“This is what happened in my eyes. I signed some papers. There was no intent to commit a crime. I didn’t know I was committing a crime,” Giudice explained. “I got indicted. The government saw it differently. I got sentenced. I… served time. I did what I had to do, and now I’m moving past it.”

Giudice’s time behind bars was anything but easy. In fact, she compares it to “living in hell.”

“I mean there was mold in the bathrooms. There was not running water constantly. The showers were freezing cold… I mean, the living conditions were really horrible. Like, horrible,” she told Robach. “There were some nights that we didn’t even have heat… It was — it was hell.”

And her jail sentence didn’t only come as a shock to fans, but it also came as a shock to her, and she was completely heartbroken.

“It, you know, broke my heart because, you know, I was always growing up the good girl, always did everything right, crossed every ‘t’, dotted every ‘i,'” she explained. “And, you know, so it was … I was sad for my daughters. And I was upset.”

But she’s moving past it, and will make a triumphant return to The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Giudice confirmed the news herself with an excited tweet.

But her return may not be as dramatic after experiencing real drama in prison.

“Yeah, it was nothing like being on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Let me tell you… when you go to prison it’s a whole different — there’s a lot of drama,” she said. “That’s all there is, is drama. And I never lived with so many women in my life before. I mean that’s all they — they thrive on drama. It was crazy to me.”
