In one of the mysteries of the modern world, some people just aren’t Beyoncé fans.
Among these confusing individuals is former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who called Beyoncé’s halftime performance “outrageous” in a rant on Monday’s Fox & Friends. Thankfully, The Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams is here to take on the haters.
Giuliani argued that since Beyoncé’s act had political overtones, she was using her music “to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive.”
Co-host Anna Kooiman pointed out a so-called contradiction between Beyoncé’s police escort and her “salute to the Black Lives Matter Movement.”
The political themes were simply too much for the event, argued Giuliani. “You’re talking to Middle America when you’re at the Super Bowl,” he said. “So if you’re going to have entertainment, let’s have decent, wholesome entertainment, not use it as a platform to attack the people who put their lives at risk to save us.”

As Jessica Williams pointed out on The Daily Show, Giuliani is writing off all of Middle America in saying they aren’t capable of handling a dialogue on race issues. (And people, at the end of the day, it’s still a dance performance, not a presidential debate — and Middle America has those, too.)
Williams puts it perfectly, “Are you saying that you can’t talk about race issues to Middle America? What are they — so delicate and unaware and maybe so white that Beyoncé is too much for them? You know what’s in the middle of America? Ferguson, Missouri.”

Williams also addressed the haters who perhaps wish that Beyoncé would go back to singing something with less tension (“Baby Boy,” anyone?). “The point is Beyoncé is black, and this song is her message. That’s what artists do: Their message is in their music. Like how Chris Martin wore his Global Citizen armband to promote his message of ending worldwide poverty.”
