Meryl Streep is trending on Twitter today, but unfortunately, it’s not for something good.

Streep was the jury president at the Berlin Film Festival opening day on Thursday, where she covered topics relating to equality and diversity, saying she was committed to the inclusion of all “genders, races, ethnicities, religion,” Page Six reports.

“This jury is evidence that at least women are included and, in fact, dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions,” Streep said. “So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”

But according to the publication, when Streep was asked by an Egyptian reporter whether she understood films from the Arab world and North Africa, she gave a controversial response.

“I’ve played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures,” she began.

“There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all, we’re all from Africa originally,” she added. “Berliners, we’re all Africans really.”

But Twitter does not agree, and Streep’s comments have created an uproar.

Some are even calling for her retirement from Hollywood.

While others want her to weigh in on the Bill Cosby case.

However, there are some people who are still rooting for the actress and think everyone is overreacting.

UPDATE Feb. 25: Streep penned an essay for TheHuffington Postdefending her statement: “I was not minimizing difference, but emphasizing the invisible connection empathy enables, a thing so central to the fact of being human, and what art can do: convey another person’s experience.”
