Few things are better than seeing someone truly come into their own, and that is especially true for Demi Lovato, who’s grown immensely in an empowering way over the course of her career.
If Lovato’s 2016 Grammys performance did anything, it solidified her as a force in the music industry. When Lovato broke the news that she had never attended the Grammys before, I realized the former Disney star may be a bit underrated.
That thought was confirmed when she stepped onstage in a killer outfit and belted out one of the most amazing performances in Grammys history. After tonight, I’m obsessed and fully believe she is the best kind of celebrity for multiple reasons.
1. She was a Disney star
Some people might argue that her Disney past is why they don’t like her; I disagree, though. Lovato got her start on Barney & Friends before moving on to numerous Disney projects, and while many ex-Disney stars have led controversial adult lives, Lovato now — at 23 — has solid experience in “the biz” that enables her to know what young people need in a real role model.

2. She’s open about her mistakes
In 2013, Lovato admitted to having a severe cocaine addiction, confessing that she “couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and [she] would bring it on airplanes.” During a candid interview with Access Hollywood, she explained,“I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it.” She battled her demons at a young age and, even harder, in the public eye. Luckily, though, she’s made it through to the other side and uses her negative experiences to inspire and educate others.
3. She’s overcome an eating disorder, self-harm and body image issues
In addition to her addiction, Lovato struggled with intense body images issues, which were likely a product of growing up in the spotlight where every flaw is magnified and torn apart online. In 2010, she attended rehab for both an eating disorder and self-harm and has spoken out against those who have made light of the afflictions. She’s constantly empowering girls and women to embrace who they are, and we think that’s incredible.

4. Her vocal skills are undeniable
Do you need any further evidence other than that hair-raising performance at the Grammys? We think not.

5. She is a champion of mental health
Five years ago, Lovato revealed she has bipolar disorder. She began speaking out for comprehensive mental health reform in Washington, saying, “One thing that I’ve learned while dealing with this in the public eye has been that as rewarding as it is, sharing my story and helping others, it’s important to take care of myself as well. I think that’s been something that’s really resonated with me over the past year. It’s great to get outside of yourself and help others, but it’s also important that I stay dedicated to my treatment plan and make sure that I can help myself before others.” Her struggle with self-harm was due in part to her inability to regulate her mental health, and her courage to share her story with complete strangers speaks volumes about her impeccable character and strong resilience.

6. She gives us all relationship goals
Take a gander over at her Instagram and you will turn green with envy at her adorable relationship with Wilmer Valderrama.

7. She has become a style icon
From her rainbow-colored hair to her amazing ensembles, she has clearly staked her claim in the body-confident camp and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. You would never guess from the form-fitting gowns, crop tops and plunging necklines that she ever had body image issues. She is the new poster child for loving and accepting yourself.
