Is everyone best friends with Taylor Swift? It seems like every week the singer is giving someone new a shout-out on her Instagram. And all of them have been sweet, but none come close to her heartfelt happy birthday message to Ed Sheeran.
Swift started her message to Sheeran by remembering the exact moment when she heard his Grammy-winning Song of the Year “Thinking Out Loud.” She wrote, “He walks in and says ‘you have to hear this new song. I think it’s the best one I’ve ever written.’ And then, as usual, he pulls out his phone and gives me headphones. I sat there on a bench in that store and heard ‘Thinking Out Loud’ for the first time, as little kids were picking out tutus and leotards next to us.”

The singer admits that they didn’t know in that moment what the song would go on to become, saying, “Little did we know it would go on to be first dance song at countless weddings all over the world.”
But what was touching about Swift’s birthday message was not that she highlighted Sheeran’s incredible talents as a songwriter, but she instead focused on his amazing ability to push her as a friend and as an artist. Her message continued with, “I don’t think he ever knew how much it meant to me that he wanted me to hear his songs first. I don’t think he ever knew how inspired I was by his drive and passion to constantly create new art. But it’s his 25th birthday today, so I’m saying it now.”

If it wasn’t so sweet and genuine, it would be gross. But there’s no way around it. Supportive friends who celebrate each other’s success and also use it to grow is inspiring. To quote Swift herself, they both deserve everything they have, and everything they will continue to achieve.
