Shonda Rhimes‘ new show, The Catch, is joining ABC‘s TGIT lineup and we personally couldn’t be more excited. Ahead of the highly anticipated premiere, here’s a look at everything we know about the series so far.
1. It will be another juicy crime drama
Like Rhimes’ other hits Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, The Catch has major themes of betrayal, fraud and double lives. It follows the story of Alice Vaughan, a private investigator from Los Angeles, who is unknowingly about to be the victim of fraud by her con artist fiancé, Kieran Booth. But Alice isn’t about to let this con go without retaliation, and in between her own cases, she sets out to discover the truth about her fiancé, setting off a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

2. It has a star-studded cast
Mireille Enos (The Killing) will play the lead role of Alice, while Parenthood‘s Peter Krause will portray her shady fiancé. Sonya Walger is set to play Kieran’s criminal wife, Zoe. Meanwhile, Rose Rollins, Elvy Yost, Jay Hayden, Jacky Ido and Alimi Ballard will also costar.
3. It’s already had some behind-the-scenes drama
The show underwent some major casting changes after the filming of the initial pilot, with original stars Damon Dayoub and Bethany Joy Lenz (both pictured above) being replaced by Krause and Walger, respectively. In August, the series saw another shakeup when show creator and showrunner Jennifer Schuur abruptly left the series, reportedly due to “creative differences” over the direction of the project.

4. It has a Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy vet as a showrunner
Luckily, the series found a good replacement for Schuur following her departure. Allan Heinberg (pictured above), who has previously written and produced for Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls and Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, has since stepped in as showrunner.
Heinberg will bring personal experience to the job. Per Variety, Heinberg was betrayed by someone he was in a 10-year relationship with, so he knows the issue of fraud well. “This was a perfect opportunity to get him to stand up,” Rhimes told Variety of his hiring.

5. It will be packed with shocking twists and cliffhangers
As the trailer highlights, the show starts off with one big twist — with Alice’s seemingly loving fiancé stealing all her money and turning her perfect life upside down. But that’s just the beginning. That sets off an increasingly complicated series of unpredictable turns… not that we’d expect anything less from a Rhimes-produced show.
6. It will showcase a major lighthearted side of Shondaland
While we can expect all the twists and turns of a TGIT show, The Catch won’t be quite as dark as the rest of that night’s lineup. Though it deals with serious subject matter, the show boasts a lighter, more playful tone, thanks to Heinberg’s revisions. “It’s not a dark, brooding thriller about corrupt people,” Heinberg told Variety. “It’s this oddly fun confection with a really different energy. I think (ABC) responded to that.”
7. It has a lot to live up to
The Catch faces its fair share of pressure from the lead-up to its premiere. Aside from standing among the acclaimed and widely watched series in TGIT, The Catch has a lot riding on it, in terms of potential network success. ABC has had mixed results with its midseason shows so far this season — Of Kings and Prophets was canceled after just a couple of episodes and The Family has already seen a dip in ratings. Whether The Catch will be able to deliver the hit the network wants remains to be seen, but we have high hopes, given Rhimes’ involvement.
The Catch will premiere on ABC on March 24.
