Musicians are standing with Kesha in the wake of her lost battle against producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, who she has accused of physical and emotional rape and abuse.
Kesha will be forced to produce six more albums under Dr. Luke’s Sony-owned label Kemosabe Records, albeit without the presence or input of Dr. Luke. In response to the ruling, #FreeKesha went viral on Twitter, drawing the support of music industry VIPs from Ariana Grande to Jack Antonoff.
Even Dr. Luke’s lawyer, Christina Lepara, felt the need to make a statement about the movement.
“The New York County Supreme Court on Friday found that Kesha is already ‘free’ to record and release music without working with Dr. Luke as a producer if she doesn’t want to. Any claim that she isn’t ‘free’ is a myth,” she said.
(False: What Kesha, fans and friends had hoped for was the “freedom” to work without profiting her alleged rapist.)

While the support from the music industry has been overwhelming — see Taylor Swift donating $250,000 to help with “any of [Kesha’s] financial needs during this time” — it’s interesting to note the gender dynamics of the responses. We were able to find 18 celebrities, of varying degrees of fame, who took a stance supporting Kesha. Four of these were men. Dudes, we need your help here, too.
If Miley Cyrus, who has worked with Dr. Luke in the past, is brave enough to publicly support Kesha, our male pop stars can get in the ring, too.

I don't know all the facts, of course, but the bottom line is: it is a terrible feeling to not own your voice/ be able to release music.

really disappointing to hear about this kesha case. no one should be denied freedom from their abuser, nor freedom of their creativity.
