Lady Gaga looked stunning on the Oscars red carpet, but more importantly, she used her time in the spotlight to show us her heart and shine a light on sexual assault victims.
Gaga is nominated for an Oscar this year in the Best Original Song category for “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground, a documentary about campus rape. She will perform the song, which she wrote with Diane Warren, during the televised broadcast.

“It’s such an important song to me,” Gaga told ABC on the red carpet. “One in five women will be raped before the time they finish college. One in 20 men will be raped before the time they finish their schooling at their university.”
Gaga went on to detail her personal connection to the song, saying, “It’s something that is deeply connected to my heart. I am myself a survivor. Diane Warren is herself a survivor of sexual violence. We’re here tonight very grateful to the Academy for giving us this world stage to reward survivors for being brave and coming forward. So I’m just really happy to be here.”

Gaga also posted an emotional message and photo with fiancé Taylor Kinney at the Oscars on Instagram. She captioned the picture, “I never thought anyone would ever love me because I felt like my body was ruined by my abuser. But he loves the survivor in me. He’s stood by me all night proud and unashamedly. THAT’S a real man.”

The “Born This Way” singer commented on what this song being nominated for an Oscar means to her earlier this week.

“Everyone says, ‘Oh, an Oscar nomination.’ It’s not about that for me at all,” she told Deadline. “Of course, it’s cool. The Oscars nominated this issue by nominating this song. Now the issue has the media talking about it, hopefully in a way I believe it deserves to be talked about. We can reach more people. When an organization like The Academy that believes in talent says ‘We care about you.’ That means that message is not just sent to me and Diane, but to people that hear the song and who went through something like this.”
