Just five episodes ago, I discussed how exasperating it was when Supergirl‘s Winn tried to force a relationship with Kara and got super weird. He’s since redeemed himself, moved on to greener pastures (ahem, Siobhan) and has proven that he can be in Kara’s life without all the obnoxious pining. It’s all fine and good that Winn is now tolerable, but James Olsen has just gone and made himself way more unlikeable than Winn ever was. Yes, that’s right, James has stepped up to fill that Toyman Jr.-sized annoyance hole where Winn used to be.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Mehcad Brooks. I’ve even been accused by readers of pandering to teenage audiences by getting googly-eyed over his crush-worthiness. Believe me, my infatuation is very real — I’ve been obsessed with him since he flashed that perfect smile and walked around with his shirt off as Eggs on True Blood — but I simply can’t get behind his character on Supergirl anymore.

Over the course of the past two episodes writers have managed to use James to reduce Lucy Lane — who has all the makings of a strong, ambitious, independent character — to a cheap, jealous plot device used to up the sexual tension between Kara and James. James continually appeared to be intimidated by Lucy’s intelligence and made it extremely clear that he didn’t want her working at CatCo. In tonight’s episode, he finally took things too far, pushing Lucy to the point of dumping him so he could pursue a relationship with Kara.

A relationship, might I add, that numerous fans have been extremely vocal about not wanting to happen.
I’m not here for James/Kara. Nope nope nope. #Supergirl

Memo to Supergirl writers: the more you push Kara and James, the more I'm going to resist and continue hating it. Please stop.

If you pair Kara and James, I'm out. I'm so done with those forced relationships #Supergirl

I'm more interested in Winn and Siobhan than James and anyone #SUPERGIRL

And while I’d love to say that James’ unlikeable quality is a recent development, I can’t. The character has been grating on my nerves for a while now — his annoyingness has been a long time in the making and his treatment of Lucy was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
For example, he always seems to want to save Kara, which is ridiculous considering the show is supposed to be about female empowerment — not creating more damsels in distress. But be it by calling Superman for reinforcement or fawning over Kara when she temporarily lost her powers, James has proven that he’s not interested in being a supportive partner. Instead, it seems an awful lot like he just wants to wear the pants in any relationship he is in.
