Star Wars: The Force Awakens proved to be a massive box office hit and, while fans eagerly await the next instalment, director J.J. Abrams has shed some interesting light on how characters may develop in future Star Wars films.

During the US-Ireland Alliance’s annual Oscar Wilde Awards at his Bad Robot headquarters, Abrams revealed that characters were going to be more diverse and that it was entirely plausible that there would be a gay character at some point in the future of the films.
“When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course,” Abrams said, The Daily Beast reports.
Abrams’ films have already seen a strong female lead with Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey, and one of colour with John Boyega’s character, Finn, so the films have already become more inclusive. Abrams revealed he would “love” it if the galaxy included different sexual preferences — a move that would see the franchise keeping up with more progressive, modern ideologies.

“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world,” Abrams explained.
There has been no mention as to who the gay characters could be, although there has been speculation that for Finn and Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, bromance could develop into much more than just friendship.
This is something Isaac shed light on during an appearance on The Ellen Show saying, “I think it’s a very subtle romance that’s happening. You have to watch it a few times to see the little hints. But it was there.
“I was playing romance,” he added.
