Monty Brinson, Richards’ first husband, died in late January after a long battle with cancer. Even though he and Richards were divorced, they had maintained a close friendship in the years preceding his death.

In a new interview with E! News, Richards got teary-eyed as she talked about losing someone she had known for nearly all of her life.

He’s definitely was the best friend I’ve ever had in my life,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve had anybody closer in my life. I don’t think I’ve ever had a better friend… I mean, I have beautiful best friends that I’ve had for a long, long time. But, you know, Monty and I were married when I was 19.”

Richards continued, “He truly was just super special. He still is. He’s an angel. We share a beautiful daughter. But he was also ‘Uncle Monty’ to my other children… You know, he lived with us for many, many, many, many years.”

But Brinson didn’t just rely on Richards — she revealed that their relationship went both ways.

“The bond we have is never-ending,” she said. “People used to say, ‘I don’t know what Monty would have done without you.’ I don’t know what I would have done without Monty. It was definitely a two-way street.”

This isn’t the first time Richards has spoken about her relationship with Brinson. The day after his death, she released a statement on Instagram, calling him “the best friend I’ve ever had in my life.

“We shared over 30 years of love & happiness and brought a beautiful daughter into the world,” she wrote at the time. “I am so grateful for all that we shared. I know we will be together again one day. I love you Monty.”
