Kim Richards reveals life struggles that led to her DUI arrest

The past couple of years have been an uphill battle for Kim Richards, but she’s finally ready to talk about it. In the episode of Watch What Happens Live airing March 8, the reality star opens up to host Andy Cohen about the nightmare night that led to her arrest.

Richards told Cohen, “I drank that night, no excuses.”

We’ve all watched Richards struggle to stay sober on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and around the time of her arrest, things were just getting to be too much for her, “I stopped focusing on myself. I stopped taking the time for me and going to meetings because I was taking care of other people and stopped caring for myself.”

She went on to say that not only was her son sick, but her ex-husband, Monty Brinson, was also losing his fight against cancer — all of which added to her stress. A mixture of stress and emotional instability is the perfect storm for anyone who struggles with addiction.

As for the night she got arrested, Richards maintains that she was trying to do the right thing. She admitted to having a glass of wine with her daughter and said, “I felt horribly guilty and I thought, ‘I need to go home. She only lives a block and a half from the hotel, so I left and I realized, ‘Oh, my God. I can’t drink and drive. What have I done?’ So, I pulled into the hotel and when I pulled into the hotel I went in.”

Richards then insisted that she sit in her usual booth. “I said, ‘Please, I’m staying. I don’t want to drive. I’m scared.’ And [a staffer was] like, ‘No, if you don’t leave we are calling the police.’ And I really thought he was joking. And he called the police.”

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for addicts to have explanations like this, so only time will tell whether this incident was enough for Richards to stay sober. But I hope for her sake that she can put all of this behind her and live a happy, healthy life.
