Taking to his blog, This Life I Live, Rory penned an emotional post titled “dust to dust,” in which he discussed Joey’s burial and how it was a beautiful tribute to her life.

“On Tuesday we laid my beautiful wife to rest,” he wrote. “In a grove of sassafras trees behind our farmhouse, with friends and family gathered around, we said goodbye to the greatest person I have ever known.”

He continued, revealing that the service started in the barn/concert hall, the place where he and Joey had once sung together, but now “a photograph of Joey was in the spotlight… and I was one of many who were there to honor her.”

Rory shared a series of photos from the funeral and described some of the most beautiful moments of the service, including family friend Bill Gaither telling stories about the “sweet girl who looked out the window from her hospital bed and saw the beauty in life and also in death.”

The ceremony was an extremely emotional time for Rory, but his tears where replaced by joy when a video, made in celebration of Joey’s life, started to play.

“…My tears were replaced by smiles and laughter and joy and more tears. It was so beautiful, set to the song ‘After You’re Gone’ by Iris Dement… a song that Joey loved and requested be played at her service.”

Then came time for the family and friends to head to the burial plot, where “a team of mules carried Joey’s simple wooden box in an 1800s wagon with six of Joey’s favorite ‘cowboys’ by her side.”

“And finally, the beautiful life that God had brought from the dust was returned to the dust…,” Rory added.

The post is heartbreaking but it also serves as a celebration of Joey’s life and the remarkable impact she had on others, including her fans. With more than 3,000 comments on the post, it’s clear that Joey’s strength and positivity was an inspiration to many, some of whom shared their thoughts in the comments section.
