Sophia Bush claims everyone partakes in body shaming, even 4-year-olds

Sophia Bush is using her voice for a lot of good lately.

In a recent interview with SheKnows, Bush opened up about one issue she’s particularly passionate about: empowering women.

“It’s always been such a part of my life,” Bush said about the cause. “I grew up doing a lot of community service and volunteer work — I was a camp counselor for many years when I was younger, and took care of amazing groups of young women on my summer vacations — and I am constantly inspired by all of the women that I meet.”

One issue that Bush says is particularly pervasive and damaging to women is body shaming.

“Even people who don’t think that they do it, I think everybody does,” she explained. “When you see 4-year-old girls talking about how they’re embarrassed about their bodies, they’re learning that somewhere. They’re hearing it at school. They’re hearing their moms call themselves fat. It’s all over magazines. It’s really, truly everywhere, and it’s scary the way that every woman is made to feel that no matter what you’re doing, you’re wrong.”

Bush said she was inspired by International Women’s Day to use her voice as an actress to create positive change for women worldwide. She teamed up with The Girl Project, Glamour magazine’s multi-year project to provide education to women and girls in countries around the world, to make the biggest difference she can.

“As we look around and see that we don’t have it so bad, we have to remember that in communities around the world, women are even more disadvantaged,” she said. “That’s why I’m really excited to be working with the Girl Project. There [are] 50 million girls in the world who don’t have access to secondary education, and that’s really where everything changes for a person, and particularly for a woman and her quality of life.”

And beauty accessory company EcoTools has joined the cause too, pledging to donate $1 to The Girl Project for every message shared on social media that empowers women, includes #MyTrueBeauty and tags @ecotools, up to $100,000.

“Knowing what that kind of funding can do for women in the 95 countries, including the United States, that the Girl Project works in makes me so excited,” Bush said.
