The Dancing with the Stars stage might not be graced with the presence of pro Mark Ballas this week after he suffered a mysterious injury.
Ballas, who is teamed up with MMA fighter Paige VanZant this season, suffered an injury onset during rehearsals on Sunday as confirmed by a show rep — but stopped short of saying what happened or what his injury is.

However, a source revealed to People that no, VanZant did not accidentally beat him up while demonstrating MMA moves and the cause is much more mundane.
“He injured his back at camera blocking rehearsal on Sunday,” the insider told the mag. “It’s an old injury that he aggravated. It’s up in the air if he’ll be able to perform tonight.”
Back in 2014, Ballas dislocated his shoulder during camera blocking, necessitating a trip to the hospital to pop it back in.
The Dancing with the Stars medical team will decide later today if Ballas is cleared to perform. If not, VanZant won’t have to miss a week. She would be paired up with former So You Think You Can Dance contestant and current DWTS touring dance troupe member Alan Bersten. But she would certainly miss Ballas, going by what she told People last week.

“Mark has been so supportive and just a lot of fun to work with,” VanZant said after last Monday’s DWTS premiere. “I don’t know how I’d do this without him.”
This is not the first injury of Season 22. Just last week, America’s Next Top Model winner Nyle DiMarco was sent to the hospital for stitches after being slammed in the face with partner Peta Murgatroyd’s elbow.
We’ll see if Ballas is feeling good enough to hit the dance floor when Dancing with the Stars airs tonight at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
