Chet Hanks is in hot water again, and this time his famous parents, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, have been dragged in with him.
The elder Hanks and Wilson are being sued by a man who was rear-ended by Chet in February 2015. Terry Moogan alleges that not only was Chet “driving his vehicle in an unreasonable and unsafe manner and was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol,” but that since the car he was driving is owned by his parents, they owe him some major cash.

By Moogan’s reasoning, Chet’s parents are liable for damages because they allowed him to use the car knowing of his substance abuse issues.
“Despite knowing that Chester Hanks was a careless and reckless driver and a habitual user of drugs and alcohol, they negligently permitted Chester Hanks to operate their vehicle,” the plaintiff alleged in court documents.
Cops were not called to the scene of the accident, nor was Chet issued a DUI. However, Moogan’s attorney claims the man suffered a brain injury and whiplash, and that Chet specifically asked for him not to call the police.

Chet has been open about his struggles with addiction and his newfound sobriety after a trip to rehab last year.
“I’ve been struggling with substance abuse since I was 16 years old,” he wrote in an Instagram post last November. “Finally at the age of 24 I decided to get some help.”
“With 50 days of sobriety under my belt, I can honestly say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m thankful for my family and everybody that cares about me, including my fans,” he continued. “I’ve been blessed with the programs of AA and NA which allow me to rise above this disease. I’m learning to accept my faults and be OK with being human. If anybody that (sic) sees this struggles with addiction, feel free to reach out.”
Moogan is seeking unspecified damages. Neither Chet, Tom or Rita Wilson have commented on the lawsuit.
