We’ve all had those moments when we just want to give up (I know I have!). When those moments strike, it can be difficult to break out of the rut in which you’ve found yourself. I often find it helpful to catch up with my favorite guys: Jonathan, Drew and J.D. Scott of HGTV‘s Property Brothers fame. Sometimes I’ll watch some of their shows. Other times I read some of my favorite quotes by them. No matter the vehicle, these guys often say things that really help me get through tough times.

“We each have the choice whether to be a good or a bad influence in the lives of others.” — J.D. Scott
This is, by and large, one of my favorites. J.D. Scott has actually made many people (myself included) a better person. I constantly find myself stopping and taking a step back, thinking about what is right and what is wrong. Am I doing the right thing? Would my niece and nephews be proud of me if I did this?
“In a lifetime, if we are truly lucky, we meet that special somebody who fits us perfectly, the person whose weird matches ours completely.”— J.D. Scott
As a single girl in her 30s, this one couldn’t be more helpful to me. Often I find myself upset because I’m still single. At times, I wonder if focusing so much on my career in my 20s and early 30s made it nearly impossible for someone to love me. Maybe I’m just too late? But then I read this, and I know that someday I’ll find the right person. I just need to wait until someone as strange as me comes along.

“The first step in bringing an idea to life is putting pen to paper.” — Drew Scott
As a writer, I often feel like I don’t have anything else to say — or worse, that no one cares about it. It can be daunting to come up with new and exciting things to say on a regular basis. Drew Scott hit the nail on the head in this paraphrase of the famous adage. Sometimes we just need to put that pen on the paper and trust that our imagination will take us where we need to go. Sometimes that is the hardest part of creating.
“It’s much easier to follow the popular path than it is to be a man of character. Well, I’ve never really cared much for crowds anyway.” — Jonathan Scott
This idea is something I will work tirelessly to instill in my nephews and niece. It really is easiest to take the path of least resistance, but think about it: When did doing that ever really get you want you truly wanted? When did it ever make you feel like you were a truly good person?

“Knowledge is all about perspective. The more you learn, the less you discover that you know.” — Jonathan Scott
The teacher in me really loves this quote, paraphrased from an old Socratic saying. At my core, I love learning. I’ve often said that my ideal guy would be one who can teach me something. Jonathan Scott is absolutely correct here: There should never be a time in our lives when we feel that we’ve learned everything. Life itself is education — perhaps the best of its kind.
