After what seemed like a very long, dramatic and convoluted road, Shadowhunters Season 1 came to an end Tuesday night. For those who are in need of more episodes, don’t worry, the series based on the books by Cassandra Clare will return for a second season at some point in the near future.

The Season 1 finale ended on a dark note for Jace, which probably has some fans worried. Will he end up like his alleged father Valentine? Will he truly go to the dark side and never find the light again? Will Jace become the next big bad of the series? There are many unanswered questions, but one thing remains for sure (at least for me, that is), which is Jace embracing a darker side isn’t really a horrible thing. Before you freak out over that statement, just stick with me.
Firstly, let me say that I, of course, don’t want Jace to be bad or to turn into a villain. However, I do think Jace choosing to go with Valentine is the right thing for him at this particular time in his life. Sometimes an individual needs to walk the wrong path in order to find the right one. Plus, it adds more excitement and dramatic effect to Shadowhunters.
For Jace, the last few episodes have taken quite a toll on him. He learned that his father all this time wasn’t actually Michael Wayland, but Valentine. Or that’s what Valentine wants him to think. As you can tell, I’m not totally convinced by that whole situation. Moving on. Then, Jace also learned Clary (the woman he was falling for and even made out with a few times) is actually his sister. Again, I’m not buying it, but still. Can you imagine discovering all of that at once and realizing your entire life has basically been a lie?

Sooner or later, Jace was going to lose it and walk a fine line between the light and the darkness. All of that information thrown at him would push anyone over the edge and would most definitely make them question their identity, along with everything else. The fact that Jace is exploring the darkness is an integral part of his journey. If he were to act 100 percent OK with it all, then I’d be questioning him. For Jace to be confused and going against everything he stood for is somewhat rational.
Let’s also not forget that Jace didn’t really have a choice when choosing to go off with Valentine. It was that or chancing the fate of his friends and family. I mean, what did you expect him to do? You might not be able to see it, but there is a bright spot to all of this. Now that Jace is literally right next to Valentine, he can learn what makes him tick and his secrets. What makes for a more perfect takedown? You know, if this all just happens to be part of Jace’s plan in defeating Valentine once and for all.
Not to mention, it also means more Valentine. I don’t know about you, but as a fan of Reign, I’m thrilled to see even more of Alan Van Sprang in action. He plays evil so well. Also, don’t act like you don’t want to see Dominic Sherwood as even more of a badass as he tips his toe in darker waters. Think Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries.
Shadowhunters will return sometime soon with brand new episodes, which means fans will get to see just how dark Jace might go. I, for one, am very curious to see just how much darkness Jace will absorb during his journey alongside Valentine.
