Ariel Winter’s new tattoo is the ultimate celebration of family and love

Since turning 18, Ariel Winter has been more willing to show off her bikini body on Instagram, but she’s also made the decision to share her ink.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Winter shared an image of her new tattoo, and the very special meaning behind it, which she explained in the caption of the post. She wrote, “My second and most special tattoo, the initials of five of the most important beings in my life: my nieces and nephew. Their initials are on my ribcage, on the side where my heart is. They are my inspiration, and my reason for living. Love these babies more than anything and proud to have their initials forever on my body.”

She followed the explanation with a list of five names from her nieces and nephews: three from her older sister, Shanelle Workman-Gray (who, according to People magazine, became her guardian in 2012 before she was emancipated) and two from her older brother, Jimmy Workman.

The tattoo is one that means a lot to Winter, and the idea behind it is really beautiful. However, the reaction to her new ink has been somewhat mixed.

Negative comments range from “Typical teenager tattoo,” and “You’re ruining yourself… tattoos are UGLY,” to “…you are such a trendy naive young bitch, what a dumb tattoo that is plain and retarded.”

Comments like this (the last one in particular) are awful, as it’s Winter’s body and she can choose what she does with it — which, in an ideal world, she would be able to do without judgment.

But there are some positive comments on the image, too, from people who think the idea is “lovely” and “awesome.”

“Those are the tattoos you’ll never regret, I have one dedicated to my best friend that passed away when we were 10,” duncan_fitness shared. “Nothing fancy but it’s my favorite.”

“Wow @arielwinter! all smart ass comments and goofy aside, that’s really profound and touching,” jphmaestro wrote. “I haven’t seen my own nieces and nephew for 4 years and I’m heartbroken. This is the coolest tat I’ve seen in a long time.”
