From Jill and Jessa: Counting On to Dance Moms, mom-shaming is rampant in the world of reality television. Although reality moms often question one another, the bulk of the shaming comes from viewers, many of whom judge the portrayed mothers’ parenting style without knowing the true story. On There Goes the Motherhood, both cast members and mothers are guilty of mom-shaming, which will likely play a huge role in future episodes.
Already, the shaming is making it difficult for the show’s mothers to be open and honest with one another. The moms are supposed to view their group therapy sessions with Jill Spivack as a safe space, but clearly, the powers that be at Bravo have never particularly desired for these cast members to feel safe and at ease with their fellow moms. If the therapy setting really did feel safe, there wouldn’t be much of a show. Rather, the moms are bound to spend much of this show griping about their different parenting styles and their unwillingness to speak honestly about their respective parenting decisions.

On the show, the mom-shaming is still fairly tame. A few moms have questioned the idea of locking kids in their rooms at night (a technique Spivack claims is more for safety in a big house than it is for acting like Big Brother). Other moms have made judgmental remarks about baby weight and the role of nannies. Additional mom-shaming is bound to appear on the show in the future, but for now, at least a few of the show’s ladies are trying to behave.

On Twitter, the shaming is just awful. Viewers have made a few very negative comments about the cast members. This is to be expected for any reality show, but typically, people wait until the series has been around for a few weeks before going on the attack. Most of the responses to tonight’s episode were negative, although a few viewers were sympathetic to the issues faced by the show’s mothers.

Regardless of how ridiculous the moms on There Goes the Motherhood may seem, outright shaming just isn’t OK. It’s impossible to know what’s going on behind the scenes, so viewers should learn the full story before they trash the show’s moms.
