Helen Mirren pays Prince the perfect purple tribute

Dame Helen Mirren paid tribute to Prince at the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night, and although she herself doesn’t think it’s the coolest way to honour the late artist, we think it’s pretty damn special.

Because how many 70-year-olds would turn up to the White House with a hand-drawn purple temporary tattoo in the shape of the Prince symbol on their collarbone?

“I admire great artists and he was a great artist,” Mirren told The Washington Post. Of her body art, she said, “I’d love to say that Prince himself did it in 1988 or something, instead of me in the bathroom this morning.”

The actress paired her tattoo with a purple gown to show her appreciation for the music icon, who was found dead at his Paisley Park estate on April 22.

Even President Obama acknowledged the greatness of Mirren during his correspondents’ dinner speech, saying, “Helen Mirren is here tonight. I don’t even have a joke here. I just think Helen Mirren is awesome.”

Mirren is well known for wearing her heart on her sleeve (or her collarbone). At the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors, she wore a T-shirt over her dress to pay tribute to Hurricane Katrina victims. And last year, Mirren was among a handful of stars who declared “Je suis Charlie” at the Golden Globes following the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Since Prince’s death, a huge number of public tributes have been made. Celebrities have declared their love and gratitude for him all over social media. TV channels and radio stations have aired Prince music, movies and concert footage. Some of the most famous landmarks in the world turned purple.

But Mirren’s handmade temporary tattoo is just as meaningful because it’s something a regular fan would do. She didn’t care if she looked ridiculous. She simply wanted to honour a great artist.
