NCIS episode featuring Michelle Obama will tug at your heartstrings

It’s election season, so we’re starting to get used to politicians on our TV screens. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders stopped by Saturday Night Live, Clinton made a cameo on Broad City, and pretty much everyone is constantly making the rounds of the late-night shows. But between stumping on the trail and actually working to make change happen, how does a politician make a visit like this happen?

Wednesday’s episode of NCISfeatures a cameo from first lady Michelle Obama, which is just as big a coup as it sounds. Showrunner Gary Glasberg chatted with E! News about how they pulled it off.

It helps to align yourself with the politician, he notes, which the show was more than happy to do. The episode will feature a story about Joining Forces, Obama and Jill Biden’s organization for the families of service members. “Whenever we can do a story that supports and explains the difficulties that our military families, we embrace it and we want people to understand,” Glasberg said. “This was natural for us.” Of course, when it’s a cause that the first lady could get behind, she has less reason to say no! Good thinking, NCIS.

But when you’re dealing with the White House, the name of the game is scheduling. There was no getting Michelle Obama to set, so NCIS came to her.

“The next thing we knew we started to plan a trip,” said Glasberg. “We are the first film production outside of a news organization to film in the White House. The West Wing filmed outside, other shows have filmed outside, but we actually went in and had an extraordinary day filming this scene. She was just wonderful and welcoming and I can’t thank her enough for what she did for our crew. And then we did a couple of scenes outside the White House as well.”

Glasberg isn’t shy about his values. “It was a special day for us. And at the end of the day it’s all about this organization and the support of this organization and we’re happy to do it.”
