It’s a sad state of Hollywood — and equality — when men can’t get over their issues with women in high-powered film roles. In a new interview with The American Way, picked up by ComicBookMovie.com, Munn discusses her decision not to pursue a role in Deadpool in favor of one in X-Men: Apocalypse. Her reason? She didn’t want to play a girlfriend.
Munn shouldn’t have to prove that she can carry a work of art as her own character without a relation to a man. Men don’t have to. Still, for anyone who’s asking, she’s more than earned her role in Hollywood as a star of The Newsroom and Perfect Couples. In this case, she’s made the sacrifice of turning down a hefty role as Deadpool’s girlfriend in favor of a role with limited dialogue where she can stand on her own two feet.

She describes the decision to the mag: “I said, ‘Is there a fight scene?’ The fight scene could be her monologue. I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’ And they said, ‘Yes, that’s an important part.'”

The Facebook comment section for this article is especially heinous, with Deadpool and X-Men fans attacking Munn’s decision. “She’s so relevant…. She’s someone who slept her way to the middle,” writes Glenn Luty.
“I would have much rather have seen Olivia Munn in those Deadpool sex scenes,” said Fernando Sanchez. Does anyone wonder why Munn wanted to stay away from this series?
At least Selah James knows what’s good: “Although Deadpool was a success, I think she made a wise decision. I’m tired of seeing female actresses just playing the girlfriend or love interest.”
