Demi Lovato takes a lot of crap online.
She’s been open about her struggles with addiction and mental illness, hopeful that her own journey might help fans with similar struggles. But with those issues come serious stigma, and with that comes internet trolling.
Lovato was up late last night on Twitter, hashing things out after trolls viciously attacked her for what she said was a joke about singer Nicki Minaj.
Minaj had posted a photo she took at this year’s Met Gala along with Lovato and Jeremy Scott, who designed both women’s dresses for the event. Minaj tagged Scott in the photo, but didn’t mention Lovato. Lovato later shared a selfie on Snapchat with the caption, “When you aren’t mentioned in a post but didn’t do s**t to the person.”
Later, she shared the photo taken on the Met Gala red carpet that shows Minaj glaring at her, which has gone viral since the event.
“This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met,” she wrote, along with the hashtag #whatsgood, referencing Minaj’s infamous onstage diss aimed at Miley Cyrus during the 2015 VMAs.

Lovato’s comments, of course, drew plenty of backlash. People on social media bashed her for days for supposedly causing drama with Minaj, before Lovato took to Twitter last night to post a lengthy rant about the bullying.
“Sometimes there’s more to the story. Sometimes there’s more s**t going on than you see,” Lovato wrote. “Maybe you DON’T know every aspect of my life so maybe you shouldn’t assume you know. Maybe I’m tired of sharing my story with the world.”
She continued, “Maybe my midnight rants are a part of my bipolar disorder. Can’t change being crazy.. But you can press unfollow… Or maybe I rant online because people assume they know things and their entitlement to know makes me feel obligated to defend myself.”

She then turned the bullying on the trolls, writing, “Imagine your grandparents finding out you spend your free time being an internet troll to celebrities you don’t even know… Imagine the love of ur life/biggest crush finding out u spend time on the Internet commenting negative s**t about celebrities. Embarrassed?”

She continued, “Or imagine telling your future children how you spent more time cyber bullying strangers than you did building a better future for them.. At least I’m honest… I’d rather annoy people with my honesty and loud opinions than stay silent and be fake as f**k. #lasttweetofthenight #goingtosleep.”
