Did The Bachelorette cast terrible men or are they just fooling us?

The men of The Bachelorette Season 12 have already gotten some serious hate and the show hasn’t even premiered yet.

Not that all of the hate is unwarranted. Between the photos and the questionnaires ABC just released online, the guys don’t seem very great.

Chad was asked who he admired most and he answered, “Myself in 10 years, alright, alright, alright.” Gag.

Evan had the nerve to say “chipped nail polish” was a deal breaker for him, which means he must be a perfect god of a human being.

James S. lists his occupation as Bachelor superfan. Nope, not kidding.

Brandon, on the other hand, lists his occupation as hipster, yet he doesn’t have any tattoos or facial hair so maybe “confused” is a better title for him.

Nick B. will dress up like Santa Claus to impress JoJo on their first night together. Even scarier, it just might work.

Trust me, the list goes on, but you get the idea.

Is it fun to call out the men for their insanely odd antics? Absolutely. Does The Bachelor franchise cast some of the men and women specifically for their talk-worthy quirks? Duh.

But I think we’re just all putting the cart before the horse here.

The guys definitely deserve a chance past awkward 20 questions-style photos in which, yeah, they’re all trying too hard to make a good impression. They’re also trying to come across as funny, witty and clever, which doesn’t always translate so well in the span of a sentence and with an audience that knows nothing about them.

Also, let me just throw this one out there: The pictures clearly weren’t edited in the most flattering of ways. Or the guys are all not very photogenic. The men look kind of washed out with their hair too colored in and their smiles just awkward enough.

Judging from their photos alone, I’d say Fletcher got the raw end of the deal this season, but from the sneak peeks at the premiere episode (and by that I mean I got to see a screener of the entire first episode), it’s clear the men are absolutely attractive. Not just attractive in the looks department but also attractive in deeper, intelligent ways that JoJo will, no doubt, look for in a husband.

So what gives, ABC?

Was the show just trying to psych us out by highlighting the guys’ flaws both in their photos and in the questionnaire?

Either way, the network definitely succeeded at getting us talking.
