Robin Wright fights for equality & 8 other stories in pop culture this week

We revisited the ’70s and ’90s this week while still battling some modern problems. Never a dull moment, right?

Here are some hot moments in pop culture you might have missed if you weren’t paying attention.

1. Robin Wright demands equal pay

In an interview with The Rockefeller Foundation on Tuesday, Wright admitted that she stood up and demanded that she be paid as much as her House of Cards co-star Kevin Spacey.

“I was like, ‘I want to be paid the same as Kevin,'” she said. “I was looking at the statistics and Claire Underwood’s character was more popular than [Frank’s] for a period of time. So I capitalized on it. I was like, ‘You better pay me or I’m going to go public.'”

Wright’s demands were met.

3. Stuff You Should Know hits No. 1 on iTunes charts

It’s been a standard for quite some time, but Stuff You Should Know rightfully reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top 10 this week.

If you aren’t familiar, this podcast is part handbook to get you through life, part pop-culture almanac. Hosts Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant aim to educate their listeners about pretty much everything under the sun, from Hula-Hoops to famous conspiracy theories.

3. Seth Meyers gives SNL a second chance

Meyers resurrected a Saturday Night Live sketch and Andy Samberg’s hair circa 2006 for a hilarious “Second Chance Theatre” on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week.

While I can totally understand why this sketch got scrapped back in the day, it still makes me nostalgic for casts of SNL past.

4. Rage Against the Machine launches a new supergroup

This week, ’90s kids were intrigued when Rage Against the Machine launched a website with a countdown to June 1 and a classic Rage image with #takethepowerback underneath.

Turns out the countdown is not for anything specific to Rage Against the Machine, per se. It’s all about guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk joining forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets of Rage, according to Billboard. Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is not involved.

Prophets of Rage will perform for the first time at the Hollywood Palladium on June 3, and a show at L.A.’s Whisky a Go Go is planned as well. Billboard reports that a 2016 summer tour is also in the works.

5. Blake Lively gets spanked on Instagram

Lively caught some major backlash for posting a picture of herself at Cannes with the caption “L.A. face with an Oakland booty” — lyrics from Sir Mix-a-Lot’s song “Baby Got Back.”

Many felt Lively’s use of the lyric was problematic, but Sir Mix-a-Lot himself approved the usage of the lyric and spoke out in support of Lively.

“That song was written with African American women in mind, but trust me, there are white women with those curves everywhere, and they were once considered fat. And that’s what the song was about. It wasn’t about some race battle,” he said, via Pret-a-Reporter.

6. Justin Timberlake drops the official video for “Can’t Stop the Feeling”

Is this guy the hardest working man in entertainment? He’s definitely up there. This super upbeat song is on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie Trolls. It will get your toes tapping for sure!

7. The Fireman hits bookshelves

From Joe Hill — the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box — comes this chilling novel about a worldwide pandemic of spontaneous combustion that threatens to reduce civilization to ashes. The tale follows a band of improbable heroes who battle to save the planet, led by one enigmatic man known simply as the Fireman.

8. Nemo goes viral for scaring an unsuspecting mom

You can only watch Finding Nemo and other animated movies so many times before they wear on you. We feel ya, lady. If I have to hear the Frozen song one more time, I’ll freak out, too.

9. The Rocky Horror Picture Show gets revamped

Fox released the trailer for its reboot of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s going to be near impossible to recreate the magic of the 1975 original, but it looks like Laverne Cox will kill it, regardless.
