Anna Kendrick should refuse to accept her Spike TV’s Guys Choice Award

Anna Kendrick is being honored by Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards airing on June 9. The cable network, celebrating its 10th “Manniversary,” will present Kendrick with the trophy, which looks like the antlers of a buck, for being “Hot & Funny.”

Although I agree she deserves the accolade, I get the impression that the category was created because the “guys” think that being beautiful plus having a sense of humor is some kind of anomaly, along the lines of the dated concept that beautiful women can’t also possibly be smart.

On Amy Schumer’s last HBO special Live at the Apollo, she observed that we as a society have low expectations for hot people to be anything more than just that. She told a story about a guy friend who met supermodel Kate Upton and relayed that the Sports Illustrated cover girl was “actually really funny.” Why assume otherwise? Of course, Schumer’s response was, “Fuck you,” because much of her act is composed of making jokes at her own expense, especially her looks. These comments are obviously for her routine because in real life, Schumer is both adorable and sexy, as evidenced by her recent Vanity Fair cover.

Schumer isn’t the only one proving hot and funny go hand in hand. The hilarious Sarah Silverman and Whitney Cummings are one runway show away from supermodel; and lest we forget Tina Fey, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Wiig, Mindy Kaling and Alison Brie. And they’re just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Perhaps this subject hits too close to home for me because years ago I got a freelance writing assignment for a well-known comedy channel. When I reported to my male supervisor, he asked if this was “a joke,” since he said I looked like I should be working at a fashion network. I assured him I was up to the task. When I handed in the finished product, he was pleased as well as surprised. “What do you know? A piece of ass with a sense of humor.” (Oh yes he did — to my face.)

If Spike really wants to give out a real honor, how about one for women who have managed to get paid the same salary as their male counterparts? There isn’t that big a pool to draw from, but the distinction will be for truly a hard-earned accomplishment.

Also being honored is supermodel Gigi Hadid, who is receiving the award called “Our New Girlfriend.” They wish.
