Rob Lowe might be swooping in to steal Fred Savage’s Live! role

Live! is already moving forward with a new co-host for Kelly Ripa, says Entertainment Tonight. Insider sources say that Rob Lowe has started negotiations to reprise his 2012 guest-hosting gig as a permanent fixture on the show.

We just have one question: What about Fred Savage? Fans reacted strongly to Savage’s turn in Strahan’s seat, but then again — we haven’t seen Lowe stop by yet since Strahan departed.

With Lowe’s show The Grinder recently canceled and his sons out of the house at college and law school, ET points out that he has the schedule and flexibility to pursue something as time-consuming as a daily hosting gig.

Lowe seems to be ready for the job as well. “I hosted it with Kelly and had the time of my life,” he told ET. “I love her… I love being able to talk to an audience every morning like that and just being fun, counter-punching, being silly and talking about cool stuff.”

Next week’s guest hosts include Jussie Smollett, rapper Common, Anderson Cooper — who has been widely considered a top contender for the job — and Mark Consuelos, Ripa’s husband. The following week, we’ll see an equal mix of hosts with experience, actors and comedians: D.L. Hughley, Joel McHale, Ryan Seacrest and Alec Baldwin. If Lowe is named Strahan’s replacement between now and then, the pressure will be off these hosts to do anything but have a great time, which could make for some excellent shows.
