Nick Jonas really wants you to know two things. Firstly, he wants everyone to know that he’s no longer wearing his famous purity ring. And secondly, he wants you to know that he fully embraces the LGBT community. At first, it was nice to see a more human side of Jonas, after he spent much of his early career as a squeaky clean Disney star, but now it’s getting to be too much.

Jonas was featured on Attitude, a magazine focused on the gay community, where he told the magazine, “On Kingdom I have a sex scene with a guy. Is it always this thing have I, has Nick? No. But it’s my lips, it’s my hands, it’s my body, even if I’m playing a character. So technically I have done that, so I wouldn’t say I haven’t, because that would be lying.”
Normalizing any LGBT love scenes or stories is a great thing. And it’s really incredible that Jonas has taken it upon himself to be an advocate for the entire community. But when he says things like this, it sounds more like he’s on a campaign to win fans instead of genuine advocacy. He comes across like a politician pandering to what he knows will make him the most successful.

Especially when you add the fact that he’s always talking about his purity ring. Or, more specifically, the absence of his purity ring. I’m all for people who want to have open, honest conversations about sex. But again, there is a point at which it becomes a weird bragging rather than trying to talk about a subject that often gets ignored.
Jonas has passed this point with both topics.
Ironically, in the article, he also added, “As me, Nick, I am very open about who I am and that I have nothing to prove. I know what I am, I’ve been honest about that.”

Unfortunately, he definitely acts like he has a lot to prove. In the future, someone should probably tell him that statements like that last one say so much more about his open-mindedness and his acceptance of everyone than one talking about how he “technically” had gay sex.
