Jenner’s reality series, I Am Cait, which documents her life after transitioning into a woman, has been pulled from African airwaves after a wave of complaints from Nigerian viewers about the content of the show.
MultiChoice South Africa, one of the largest satellite TV providers in Africa, announced to viewers that it will no longer broadcast the show on its E! channel out of “respect” for viewers after receiving complaints from Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in Africa.
“MultiChoice recognises the importance of respecting the views of its customers and all regulatory environments within which its service operates,” the company said in a statement.

E!, which produces the show, also released a statement. “E! stands by the diverse range of content it produces and broadcasts around the world. As an international channel, we recognise that regulatory environments vary across the world and we always seek to comply with regulations in the countries where we broadcast. As this matter relates directly to DStv and the Nigerian regulatory authorities, this issue is for their comment.”
I Am Cait isn’t the first transgender-focused show to be banned in Africa. I Am Jazz, a reality show chronicling the life of transgender teen Jazz Jennings, was also removed from African networks following complaints from Nigerian customers. Both I Am Cait and I Am Jazz won GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Reality Program.
South African viewers of the show started a Change.org petition to reverse the ban on showing I Am Cait. The petition had fewer than 250 signatures as of Tuesday morning.
