Finally! Gwen Stefani is doing something without Blake Shelton

2016 has basically been the Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Show. Between promotion for The Voice, both brand new albums, their duet “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and Snapchat, they’ve been seen everywhere. They’re certainly a cute couple, but for those of us who have been a fan of Stefani since her No Doubt days, it’s been getting a little old. So when she released the video for “Misery,” it was such a relief.

The greatest thing about the video is that it is 100 percent completely Stefani. There’s no sign of Shelton at all. Unless, of course, you count the fact that he may have been the inspiration for the part of the song where she sings, “Where’d you go? I got so used to being ’round you, boy, I’m trying not to care, but where’d you go? I’m doing my best to be sensible, I’m trying not to care.” That certainly sounds like it could be a song about two crushing costars.

But visually, the video is Stefani at her best. She takes advantage of her incredible fashion sense by wearing body suits, mesh gowns and red, flowing shawls. Every outfit she wears proves why so many people have called her a fashion icon for decades now.

Not to mention, her face is flawless. Throughout the video, the video shows close-ups of Stefani and you remember how beautiful she is. Her makeup is subtle (by her standards), but she still looks stunning. Especially when contrasted with the dark, warehouse background, her porcelain skin is almost angelic. And then there are the dancers.

Dressed in suits, three dancers show off their skills while Stefani sings. It’s fun, energetic and all the other reasons why Stefani has been the ultimate performer for all these years.

There’s nothing about this video that we don’t love. And it’s not just because it’s a fierce video. It’s also because it’s a breath of fresh air to see her on her own. She’s not Blake Shelton’s girlfriend or a coach on The Voice, she’s Gwen Stefani, the rocker, singer and fashion icon. And we always need more of that.
