Bringing Up Bates returns on a somber note for the Bates family

The Season 4 premiere of Bringing Up Bates tonight got uncomfortably serious, as Gil Bates headed into surgery.

Gil, the Bates family patriarch, suffered from a condition called diverticulitis, which is inflammation or infection pockets in one or more areas of the intestines. In Gil’s case, surgery was necessary to fix the problem. He had the inflamed area removed.

While it is a standard procedure, like any surgery, there are risks involved, and it really made the Bates family take a pause to appreciate their dad.

The kids even started considering the fact that their dad might not come home. The risk of that was small, but it was still present with any type of surgery like this. Complications are always possible, which was definitely a scary situation for Kelly Jo and the children to consider.

Not gonna lie, I even teared up a little bit listening to Gil talk, because the family is really so close. I don’t care whether you ascribe to the Bates’ religious beliefs, you can’t deny the fact that they are clearly doing something right. The whole family loves spending time together, and they’re so supportive of one another. Just because it isn’t the lifestyle I would choose for myself, doesn’t mean I don’t see the value in the kind of close-knit parenting Gil and Kelly Jo have brought into their family.

Gil is an amazing dad. He always takes the time to spend with his children and, when you’ve got 19 of them, making each and every one feel special and appreciated is no small feat, but we’ve seen Gil do just that time and time again on the show.

Bringing Up Bates does an amazing job of pulling viewers into this family, and Gil’s surgery experience was no different. My heart went out to them, even knowing that this took place months ago and Gil is fine and healthy again now.

Of course, I’m hoping that the rest of Season 4 of Bringing Up Bates is smooth sailing for the family. Health scares like that are definitely not an exciting way to start the season. Luckily, it ended on a happy note with Gil’s recovery and a fun snow day. Hopefully the happiness only continues this season. And by that, I mean babies, courtships and new adventures for the children growing up.
