The amount of pressure that Khloé Kardashian deals with on any given day is incomprehensible to me. Beyond the fame and the gigantic family and the problematic relationship with her ex-husband, she’s got opinions flying at her 24/7 from strangers on the internet. It’s no surprise that Khloé’s started creating boundaries that she demands that her family respect. It’s the only way she could possibly stay sane.

In tonight’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Khloé had a very serious conversation with her mom, Kris Jenner, about the way Kris treats her ex, Lamar Odom. Khloé made it very clear that while she loves Lamar and always will, they are not together, and she is still moving forward with the divorce despite his health scare.
The conversation was surprisingly mature as far as Kardashian conversations go. Neither one of them got heated or disrespectful. It was simply a daughter asking her mother to support her in her decisions. At one point, Khloé asked Kris flat out why she wouldn’t want more for her daughter than an unhealthy relationship. It was as powerful as it was uncomfortable.

Khloé deserved to ask for this support, and Kris was right to listen to her. Khloé admitted that deciding to get a divorce the first time was the hardest thing she’s ever done. The fact that she has to do it again should garner extra support from her mom, not less.
With so many reality shows on air that glorify unhealthy relationships (I’m looking at you, Dorinda Medley and Ramona Singer), it’s refreshing to see a healthy discussion end well for both people. Beyond both women being respectful and understanding each other, the audience got to see that it’s OK for Khloé — or anyone — to demand to be treated well and that boundaries are important to have.

The moment showed how to establish boundaries, approach a difficult conversation and stand up for yourself, even if the person you’re up against is your own mother. For fans of the show who are young and just starting to navigate meaningful relationships, it was an important topic to cover, and I think Khloé did an excellent job.
