Amber Heard isn’t dropping her spousal support request because she lied

In the latest move in a contentious divorce, Amber Heard has withdrawn her request for temporary spousal support. This decision comes as critics have accused Heard of “blackmailing” Depp.

As E! reports, the initial request would have granted Heard $50,000 per month if fulfilled. She claims that the request has been “used against [her] to distract and divert the public away from the very serious real issue of domestic violence.”

Heard makes it clear that the dropped request is a direct response to the PR campaign against her. The documents read: “In light of the coordinated false and negative media campaign falsely depicting my attempts to attain a CLETS Domestic Violence Restraining Order as being financially motivated, I am hereby with drawing the request… for spousal support.” The reference to a “coordinated” campaign may allude to Depp’s attorney Laura Wasser and the PR team a powerful man like Depp can have on call for exactly this situation. E! reports that she will be able to request support as the proceedings continue.

Heard is sending a clear message that her decision to divorce her husband isn’t a money grab. It’s currently up in the air whether she’ll receive a permanent restraining order against Depp, which would lower the numbers for spousal support even further. As Heard — and her witness and friend iO Tillett Wright — have stated, she’s seeking to legally escape a violent situation.
