Nick Cannon’s ‘Divorce Papers’ freestyle isn’t about what you think it is

Nick Cannon is over the divorce drama and ready to set the record straight. He released a freestyle titled “Divorce Papers,” but it isn’t about throw shade at his ex, Mariah Carey, or his reported reluctance to sign those divorce papers. Rather, it’s all about love, being honest and clearing the air.

“My purpose for creating this ‘Divorce Papers’ freestyle was not to feed the tabloid chatter, or even to diffuse it,” Cannon told Karen Civil. “This was strictly a creative way for me to express my frustrations with the media, the naysayers, myself and ultimately with the voices in my head.”

“When y’all need help/ y’all call me/ When I need help, y’all call TMZ/ and y’all believe everything that you see,” Cannon raps on “Divorce Papers.”

Cannon says he was reluctant to release the song at first, but ultimately decided that he had to put out the track.

“I’ve been sitting on the song for almost a week now because I was really torn on whether or not I should release it. The last thing I would ever want to do is add fuel to the fire, especially a fire that was fabricated by the press,” Cannon said. “But ultimately, I felt it was necessary to clear the air and set the record straight once and for all.”

Cannon also revealed to Civil that he and Carey are in a good place, despite all the negative rumors.

“My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy. I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that,” Cannon told Civil. “When it comes to expressing myself, I take the fearless approach, and that’s what I chose to do here.”

Cannon also raps about his kids in the song, saying, “My daughter said daddy why your eyes in tears/ because last time I dropped your brother off I didn’t get a call the next day and it felt like years/ and Ima be honest/ sometimes I hate to hear you’re on the other line having fun without me/ I wonder if my son will ever doubt me…/ What’s love I don’t care about it I just want my kids to be safe.”

“As Father’s Day approaches this weekend, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on my life as a father and how I want to be the best one I can be, the way my father figures were to me,” Cannon told Civil. “So with that said, I just ask that the public continues to respect our process and remain patient and loving as me and my family aim for happiness.”

Cannon posted multiple photos celebrating Father’s Day with the twins and Carey at Sky Zone, a trampoline park.

“Leaving the haters in the wind! LOL They want us to be mad so bad! @MariahCarey but we happier than happy! #HappyFathersDay,” Cannon captioned the family photo.
