We’re just two episodes in on CBS’ new series, BrainDead, and I’m already finding myself (literally) itching to find out what happens next. In Episode 2 of the political dramedy — which was assigned the wordy title “Playing Politics: Living Life in the Shadow of the Budget Showdown — A Critique” — Laurel Healy seems to be fitting in just fine despite being a documentary filmmaker-turned-Capitol Hill staffer for her brother, Senator Luke Healy. She snagged herself a “date” to the Tax Prom with their Republican competition, Garth Ritter, and she helps a girl with cancer finally get her visit to the Lincoln Memorial.
However, having political power in Washington does come with its hardships. Especially when space ants are crawling inside people’s heads and turning people into non-drinking, political zombies. Yep, things are getting insane. And Laurel and Luke are in some serious danger.
But here’s the thing. They’re both not totally clued in on what’s going on. And that’s what’s making every place they go and every person they see that much more threatening. They are just fresh brains waiting to be infested.

Laurel definitely knows that something’s going on. She not only already started to kill a number of space ants that she found crawling in her home (which did not die from bug spray by the way), but she’s seen and heard some questionable things. Between the weird people staring at her, Scarlett Pierce’s sudden odd behavior, a number of politicians not drinking and the people whose heads seem to be miraculously exploding all over the city, she’s no idiot to the clues right in front of her. But Luke, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be catching on just yet. And if she doesn’t find out enough information in a timely fashion, then Luke may never have a chance to know.
In fact, there were two times in this episode were I just about lost it. First off, how could you forget the moment when Scarlett tried to trick Luke into staying as the space ants crawled up the bed? Eek! That moment was just straight-up not OK. For one, Luke didn’t even realize that in that exact moment he could have possibly lost his mind (seriously). And if he doesn’t stop cheating on his wife and seeing Scarlett once and for all, then who’s to say that this exact circumstance can’t happen again? As more and more politicians get affected, more and more of them could make it their job to get him infested with space ants as well.

As for Laurel? Well, she dodged one major bullet. With Laurel’s friend Abby infecting Stacie over tea, Laurel’s group of uninfected people around her also happens to be getting smaller and smaller. And all we can do is sit around and wait. Wait for Laurel to connect the dots, get in contact with Gustav Triplett and bring Rochelle Daudier in so they can figure out what’s going on. Laurel’s still got a long road ahead of her, but with more and more becoming infested, it’s a ticking time bomb. And, as for us, all we can do is keep our eyes peeled for more of those creepy little space ants. I’m getting the best bug spray I can find.
