Singers can do well on America’s Got Talent, but these days,The Voice is a better option if you want to make it in the music industry. After all, even if you don’t win, you get to work directly with some of the industry’s biggest names.

Not everybody can make it on The Voice, however, and not just because of talent. While some of the show’s contestants are very, very young, there’s a whole crop of even younger singers just waiting for their big opportunity. But for 14-year-old Jayna Brown, there is no time to wait for the show’s age cutoff. She and her mom are in dire straits and the time to make it big is now.
A lot of great auditions stood out during tonight’s episode of America’s Got Talent, but nobody could quite match Brown’s earnestness. She desperately needs a big reality TV success story right now, as she and her mom have fallen on hard times.

Sob stories are a dime a dozen on this show, but it was hard not to feel for Brown and her mother, who were facing extreme financial hardship at the time of the audition. They sadly lost their house and the only thing keeping them from living on the street was the kindness of a friend.
The pressure had to be intense for Brown, but she handled her audition like a champ. Her voice was incredibly mature, as was her overall stage presence. For a brief moment, it felt like I was watching the semifinals on The Voice and not merely the audition round on America’s Got Talent.

Brown’s phenomenal performance earned a standing ovation from two of the four judges (Mel B and Heidi Klum), as well as high praise from Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. Viewers were also quick to praise Brown on Twitter.

Normally, I’m not a huge fan of singing on America’s Got Talent. I can acknowledge that the singers are talented, but I want to see magicians, jugglers, escape artists — acts that I can’t see on other reality shows. Brown, however, has me convinced that singing on America’s Got Talent may not be so bad after all.
