After watching Bethenny Frankel’s health scare, I vowed to take better care of myself

I have to admit, when Bethenny Frankel started talking about her bleeding on last week’s The Real Housewives of New Yorkepisode, I was sure she was playing it up for the cameras. She’s known to be a bit dramatic, so I thought this was just another thing she was blowing out of proportion that she would blow off later. But when she revealed how bad it actually was on tonight’s episode, I was forced to reevaluate my own health priorities.

Frankel’s mystery bleeding was so severe that it left her with three options, one of which was a hysterectomy. There’s no doubt that she took it seriously, but she’s a businesswoman who’s running a huge corporation. Chances are good that Frankel put off going to the doctor for much longer than she should have. Not because she didn’t know better, but because she had different priorities.

When she finally got the diagnosis and the treatment options, it was a gigantic wake-up call. For her and for me.

Like Frankel, I have a tendency to put everything but myself first. Whether it’s family, friends, household chores or work, there are at least a hundred things on my to-do list before I take care of my health. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a physical. But by doing everything for everyone else, Frankel (and every woman like her) is actually doing a disservice to them. It means Skinnygirl, her daughter and the other Housewives will never get the best of her because she’s run down and exhausted.

The problem is I don’t think any of us realizes we’re performing at less than our potential. We’ve all gotten so used to being constantly busy and overcommitting to things that we wouldn’t even know how to describe fully rested or healthy if someone asked us.

Hopefully going through this health scare is enough to force Frankel to prioritize herself above everything else, because it definitely did that for me.
